Adult Inpatient Wards

We operate an innovative 3-3-3 model across our Acute Adult Inpatient Wards. Our time-limited inpatient pathways for assessment (3 days), treatment (3 weeks), and recovery (3 months) replace traditional acute wards with medium to long lengths of stay.

By making beds available, 3-3-3 aspires to improve access, deliver early treatment, and reduce the length of hospital stays. We focus on providing care, which is structured, planned and holistic, in an environment which allows service users to be supported by a range of staff whose goal is to empower and engage service users and their loved ones.

Our Adult Inpatient Wards are based in Cambridge, on our Fulbourn Hospital site, and Peterborough, at the Cavell Centre. On each site we have 3 wards: Acute Assessment Unit, Treatment, and Recovery. The 3-3-3 model is a radical redesign of acute mental health care which requires strong teamwork and communication.

Nursing

Nursing

Mental Health Nursing is a demanding but rewarding career choice. You'll need to be compassionate, respectful and a team player with excellent communication skills and in return we can offer you a supportive, nurturing team to empower you to make a positive difference to the lives of service users.

So, if you enjoy a fast-paced environment, working with a diverse range of people to support you, inpatient nursing is for you.

We are focused on providing patient centred, service-user led care. We provide a range of bio/psycho/social and pharmacological interventions, therapies, activities, and education, to enable a safe discharge.

As a nurse’s role on the ward changes daily, our duties vary depending on the needs of our service-users and what support they require to ensure their recovery. When someone is in distress, we need to respond appropriately to reassure and support the service user by using positive coping methods established by the service user, their carers, and the multidisciplinary team.

Working together with service-users aged between 18 to 65 who come with their own unique complexities, backgrounds, and cultures, means each day has new challenges and no two days are alike.  Our goal is always to ensure our service users’ needs are put first.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy

Our inpatient Occupational Therapy team offer a unique model of care focussed on supporting our service users. We have centralised our OT resource, rather than OTs being assigned to individual wards, they support our service users in their journey through our wards thus improving the development of therapeutic relationships.

The team have also introduced an innovative referral pathway, designed specifically to fit the needs of our service, and keep occupation focussed assessment and intervention as our core business. We have some fantastic facilities at our disposal including gym facilities, gardens, and, in Cambridge, our new ADL kitchen.

Working as an OT in and inpatient setting affords you the opportunity to utilise your specialist clinical skills every day, working with other OTs, allowing you to build and develop your clinical skills.

Psychology

Psychology

Our inpatient Psychology team, work across the wards supporting service users at their most vulnerable. Working with service users in this setting requires specialist skills as you have a limited time to work with them. As a result, a significant part of your role will focus on supporting MDT colleagues to formulate and carry out therapeutic interventions to support service delivery.

We offer a range of psychological interventions including DBT informed, CBT, EMDR, ACT, person centred and psychoeducation. Alongside these therapies, we offer our service users the opportunity to attend therapeutic groups. When considering the needs of the people we care for we offer personality assessments, neuropsychological assessments, and forensic risk assessments. We have close ties with our colleagues in the community and specialist services too.

Our vibrant department which comprises services in Cambridge and Peterborough has close links with UEA and we receive trainees’ clinical psychologists completing their doctoral programme.

We are invested in providing the best care for our service users and frequently engage in research opportunities to guide our innovation and service development. We work collaboratively with the other members of the multidisciplinary team to complete research projects as a service.
